I started my writing career as a correspondent for my local newspaper, the Valley News. It was great training because the region where I live (known locally as the Upper Valley) includes parts of Vermont and New Hampshire with enough news, culture and interesting people to keep me busy.
My first assignment was covering a five-town school district in New Hampshire but my opportunities expanded to feature articles and the news in other parts of our lovely part of northern New England.
From there, I became the editor of three different magazines, spent two and a half years as a marketing manager for a mid-sized book publisher, cultivated my design skills to include book design, and wrote for lots of outlets including the Boston Globe, Vermont Magazine, Upper Valley Life magazine, and the Old Farmer's Almanac.
My first two non-fiction books, American Patchwork and Teach Yourself Visually Quilting, were both published in 2007 and I'm currently working on a companion book for my Teach Yourself Visually book.
In addition, I guide writers who want to publish their own work through the publishing process. I'm also a founding partner of White River Press.
Please write. I love to talk about books and publishing—and quilting and living in Vermont and lots of other stuff.
